We started to learn about the planet Venus for our planets topic. The children learned that this is the 2nd planet from the sun and it's bigger than Mercury. We also discussed how it's the hottest planet and there are big clouds made of gases that keep all the heat in. Venus is made from rocks, mountains and volcanoes, although the children were interested to learn why there is no lava from the volcanoes? This led to us making our own volcanoes using paper cones and then we crushed them as the rocks crumble or melt over millions of years and no lava comes out. Logan said "The volcano goes flat because of the sun and it doesn't let the lava get out." Elijah said "It's got clouds that cover the planet."
Snack was rice cakes, cheese, grapes and carrot sticks with a choice of milk or water.
We are celebrating Chinese New Year this week and we had lovely dressing up clothes out, money wallets with gold dragons on them, Chinese tableware with chopsticks, pretend sushi and wool for noodles. Some children could lift the noodles using chopsticks. Some children helped Miss Smith to paint a box green to make a large dragon.
At get together time we found a big space and stretched up high to pretend to be a volcano on Venus and had to slowly melt down to the ground. We then sat down and Cody sang the days of the week song to his peers. Then Robbie told us about Buddy Bears sleepover at his house. Buddy got to meet all Robbie's family from Northern Ireland and went bowling for a birthday party for Jamie (Robbie's big brother) Buddy was happy to see Jamie again. Robbie said Buddy just watched and ate cake as teddies can't lift bowling balls. Buddy slept in Robbie's bed and got some cuddles from baby Martha too. After that we learned how to say Happy New Year in Chinese and Ros told us it's the year of the rooster.
We had a game of duck duck goose but the children chose their own words. Ruari said new year new year, Chinese. Melody chose Elsa, Elsa, Frozen.
Tomorrow is Leon's turn for show and tell.
